If you’ve recently decided to make a career change or you’ve been contemplating switching industries for a while, perhaps you’ve considered real estate. Fortunately, getting a real estate license doesn’t require a college degree.

Whether you hope to specialize in residential, industrial, or commercial real estate, continue reading to learn how to reach your goal.

Find Your State’s Requirements

Because there’s no national exam for real estate licensing, each state has its own requirements. For example, your state might require you to be a certain age or have a certain level of education to apply for your license. Your state’s real estate regulatory website will have all of the information you need to make sure you meet the qualifications.

Take Your State’s Prelicensing Course

Before you can take your real estate license exam, you’ll have to take a prelicensing course. The course requirement is the same for all states. However, some states require more hours than others. In many cases, these coursework hours can be completed online in addition to a classroom.

Take Your State’s Licensing Test

Once you’ve completed your prelicensing course, you’ll be ready to take your licensing exam. The exam will test you on general and state-specific knowledge. Exams are multiple-choice and computerized. You need to pass both sections to get your license, but if you fail, you’ll be able to retake the test again. The amount of time you’ll have to wait before retaking your exam will depend on your state.

Get Your License

After you’ve received your passing scores, you can submit your application and all required fees to your state’s real estate organization. Once the state regulatory board approves your application, they’ll mail your license, and your name will be searchable in your state’s real estate agent database.

Start Your Career

Now that you have your license, you’re ready to start your career. But, first, take some time to join some national real estate organizations. Organizations such as the National Association of REALTORS can give you some helpful networking tools to help you find a job that’s the right fit for you.

A career in real estate can be a great way to meet people and keep your days from becoming monotonous. Getting your license might take a bit of time and money, but you’ll be rewarded in the end with a fulfilling and enjoyable career.
